As we embark on our next 20 years, we are committed to developing new work through our New Play Initiative. We are investing in the Tennesse Williamses and Lorraine Hansberrys of tomorrow by supporting their work today with workshops, premieres, and – most importantly – time to be creative and take risks. We are proud to kick off this initiative in Season 20 with the World Premiere of Rebellious, which was commissioned in 2017 by Triad Stage with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts and a private donor. Throughout our closure we cultivated the play with virtual developmental workshops designed to provide playwright Mike Wiley with opportunities to explore ideas, hear the script, and have the space and time to build the story.
In addition to this World Premiere in Fall 2022, we engaged in a developmental workshop of NYC playwright Patricia Lynn’s Jekyll, a contemporary adaptation of the gothic novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Jekyll had a week of rehearsal followed by four workshop readings, giving the playwright time for feedback, reflection, and adjustments. As she considers what she has learned in the workshop readings and from the audiences that viewed them, Patricia Lynn will have almost a full year to hone the script for a full production.
The New Play Initiative will give playwrights the support to develop new work at Triad Stage with the ultimate goal of a world premiere production included in every season. Your support of the New Play Initiative can make a big impact on the classics of tomorrow. Donate today!
