Michael Garval

Michael Garval is Professor of French at North Carolina State University, where he also directs the interdisciplinary Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program. Professor Garval’s research has focused largely on the rise of celebrity in the modern world: his first book, ‘A Dream of Stone’: Fame, Vision, and Monumentality in Nineteenth-Century French Literary Culture (Delaware, 2004) examined literary celebrity; a second, Cléo de Mérode and the Rise of Modern Celebrity Culture (Ashgate, 2012), explored early show business celebrity; and his current book project, Imagining the Celebrity Chef in Modern France, investigates the origins of the modern celebrity chef.
